Qualifications help an individual prove to prospective employers that they can do the job they say they can. This is especially relevant in roles where Health & Safety qualifications are crucial, such as Grips.

Skillset works closely with awarding bodies and industry professionals to ensure that Vocational Qualifications are mapped against National Occupational Standards (NOS) where possible and reflect current industry practices.

Skillset has consulted with BECTU, the guilds and individuals working in the UK film industry to help develop both NOS and qualifications for film.

Qualifications can be taken by experienced industry professionals through workplace assessment (studio or location).

Further qualifications and apprenticeships will be added in the future.

Case Study

John Bailie, a focus puller, who went through the professional assessment to gain a Level 3 diploma, praised the initiative as a good way to raise the standard across the industry.

“I’ve been in the industry more than 25 years, so the reason I got my qualification was to set an example for people coming up through the ranks. It just gives some sort of structure to the camera department. As more people get the qualification, it’s good for suppliers because they know who’s coming through the door,”

“One half of the assessment process involves being observed while at work, the other half is a portfolio and written units pertaining to different aspects of your job. The qualification can be gained over a period of up to six months.”
